USA 2002 - Columbus

Near Columbus, Georgia, we visited our friends Dave and Jane Wilson.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt first came to Warm Springs near Columbus in 1924 in hopes of recovering from the effects of polio. His love for the area led him to build a small cottage in 1932, which was later called The Little White House. He visited it 16 times and died here of a massive stroke on April 12, 1945 while sitting for a portrait.

Columbus’ historic district  features many well preserved 19th century houses. The Pemberton House (below left) was occupied by Dr. J.S. Pemberton , a druggist and originator of the formula for Coca-Cola.
